The Importance of Henry Ford in the Region
Last Wednesday evening I presented on the Remote Workforce Keweenaw initiative at the Baraga County Chamber of Commerce’s Business After Hours event at Skipper’s Bar & Grill in L’Anse. It turned out to be a nice opportunity to make new connections, including meeting a remote worker and learning about another.
We picked up just enough new snow by the end of last week that Jim Tervo was able to groom some really great tracks into the Chassell Trails. I put in a 6-mile ski while Julie snowshoed.
I did not wear my GoPro, but I did shoot a few videos on my phone during some downhill glides which I threw onto Instagram as reels at the following links: in the upper loop, near the water plant, and just below the 2K cutoff.
On Saturday I got out for a 6-mile run out to the end of Halfmoon Beach and back. Along the way and coming back, I ran down to the boat launch at Centennial Park here in Chassell. The parking lots north of the pavilion and down by the launch were completely full of vehicles. The park is a great jumping off point for those ice fishing both on Pike Bay (where there was quite a community of tents) and on the humps.
I spent the afternoon ice fishing with my friends Eero and Bill. It was my first time getting out this winter so it was great catching up with the two of them!
On Sunday, seventeen of us from our hiking/skiing group met up at the Tomasi Trailhead at Maasto Hiihto in Hancock. The conditions were very fast so we carefully chose our route to keep the lesser skilled skiers safe.
I slammed together some videos and photos from the ski using the GoPro app which you can find on the Remote Workforce Keweenaw YouTube channel at this link:
On Monday morning I drove down to L’Anse to have breakfast at Cafe L’Anse with Wayne Abba and Mike DesRochers to learn about their work involving the Ford Alberta Sawmill.
Wayne is the remote worker I met at last Wednesday’s Baraga County Chamber event. He is a consultant working remotely from Skanee. Both Wayne and Mike have a great deal of passion for preserving this significant historic site to the south of L’Anse. If you would like to learn more about it, I would highly recommend checking out this video:
After breakfast we ran up to Pequaming where Wayne and Mike shared this other significant Ford site along Keweenaw Bay.
With a little more snow and some fresh grooming on Tuesday, Julie and I skied nearly seven miles at Maasto Hiihto and Churning Rapids. We got off-trail for a bit and skied a portion of the Ruby Marsh.
