Waterfall Hiking Near Mt. Arvon
With the summer winding down, Julie and I have been getting out for hiking adventures as frequently as possible knowing that winter is not so far around the corner. We love winter, but it is hard to beat mild temperatures when there are next to no bugs to be found in the woods!
I would start last Friday morning with a 2,500 yard swim at the MTU SDC. Julie and I would then turn over the cabin after a one-night stay by a former member of the Coast Guard and then head down to Baraga County to hike along Pea Can Creek and the West Branch of the Huron River. This is a rather remote area reachable by the Ravine River Road in the northeast shadow of Mt. Arvon.
On our way out, we would make a stop at the Silver River Bakery along US 41 just to the south of L’Anse, where I snagged the last brownie! From there and for a change of pace, we initially made our way toward Mount Arvon via the Dynamite Hill Road instead of the Skanee Road. There is a lot less pavement going this way, but this route allows you to avoid slowing down for downtown L’Anse. Eventually we would connect up with the Ravine River Road which would lead us to Pea Can Creek. This pleasant stream flows under a high canopy forest and over some beautiful slide waterfalls. The first one below can be found just north of the road.
The recent rains have really motivated the mushrooms to fruit! We found quite an assortment as we made our way downstream.
After passing by quite a number of smaller waterfalls, the creek dams up behind this sloped rock wall and gently flows down its surface.
With no wind in the tree tops, the only sound was the relaxing whisper of the water.
Just downstream from the falls was this really cool cluster of mushrooms on a log over the creek.
After hiking back to the truck, we drove just a short distance eastward and hiked down a two-track to Letherby Falls on the West Branch of the Huron River. This particular waterfall has a character all its own with its pock-marked face.
