Welcome to 2023!
2022 wrapped up with a combination of runs, skis, and parties! To wind down the year I even doubled up one day and knocked out a nearly 9-mile classic ski at Swedetown ahead of an evening run with the Keweenaw Running Group.
The following day we got out for a ski on the Tolkien Trails at Michigan Tech with our friends Lisa and Ryan. This dog friendly set of trails is a great place to ski if you are looking for more gentle terrain.

Before heading out for a New Year’s Eve party at Jeff and Denise’s, I worked in my last run of 2022 out to Halfmoon Beach and back. Yaktrax were definitely in order as I encountered a number of icy spots along the way!
Although we didn’t stay until the turn of the new year, we had a great time meeting people we previously did not know and I picked up leads on two more remote workers.
New Year’s Day we skied with our skiing/hiking group at Swedetown. The conditions were awesome! We kept our ski to an hour and a half as we were then off to a party being held by our friends Pete and Arlee.

While at Pete and Arlee’s, a group of us got out to pank down the snowshoe trail in the woods behind their place. Our group flushed up some wild turkeys which were crazy to watch fly through the thick woods. We also came across a shrew making its way through the fluffy top layer of snow. There was more great food and conversation at this party where I learned about yet another remote worker.
Monday came this week and it was time to burn off more of the calories accumulated over the holiday weekend, so I worked in another run out to Halfmoon Beach. Since we picked up some new snow, the footing was appreciably better than it had been on my previous run. The new year and week also brought the 2023 US Cross Country Ski Championships to Michigan Tech!
Tuesday I attended a Team Peninsula meeting and then spent my afternoon knocking out the minutes from the December planning commission meeting and preparing for Thursday evening’s meeting.
Wednesday was spent following up on more township business before heading out to run with the Keweenaw Running Group. We had a great turnout and it was a particularly frosty run!
