Winding Down Summer
My fraternity brother Mark has seen hundreds of Upper Peninsula waterfalls, but he had never been to the Silver River canyon. We had some awesome late summer weather last Tuesday so we met up with our friend Steve Jurmu (aka Yooper Steve at https://www.funintheup.com/) and bushwhacked to and then up the numerous waterfalls of the Silver River.
Hiking the Silver River means getting wet because in many places you have conglomerate walls on both sides of the stream. The stream is shallow for the most part making for easy wading, but there are few holes along the way that you will want to avoid. When hiking up the waterfalls themselves be sure to opt for the moss-covered rocks as they provide excellent traction. Bare rocks are more on the order of banana peels!
Another caution about hiking the river in September is that the water is not nearly as warm as it is in July and August. I realized after completing most of the lower portion of the hike that a few of my toes in my tighter sandal were totally numb necessitating a break to massage some warmth and circulation back into them.
We continued our bushwhack into one more really cool waterfall upstream when time required that we pull away from the river to make our return to the vehicles.

The next day we trailered a load of lumber to a remote location on the North Country Trail then carried the lumber to the site where a bridge will be constructed over a stream. A decent number of volunteers made fast work of moving the lumber in just over three miles of hiking back and forth!
