Winter Carnival Week
The past week started with an awesome ski at Churning Rapids and Maasto Hiihto! Mark and I met up at the Christensen Road Trailhead on M-203 with the idea being that we would have vehicles there to shuttle skiers back to the Tomasi Trailhead at the completion of the ski. We headed out on just over a 4-mile ski to Tomasi where we would meet up with the rest of our ski group. Lake effect snow had fallen overnight and was continuing to fall as we made our way southward. The trees, laden with powder, created the appearance of a winter wonderland!
Our friend John had gotten to Christensen Road a little before us so he had cut the snow ahead of us on the tracks that had been laid down that morning. Surely this made our ski to Tomasi a bit faster than his! We met up with our group at the Tomasi Trailhead just before 2 p.m. and skied back to Christensen Road via the Tomasi Loop, Tomasi Road, the New River Trail, the Ruby Marsh Crosscut, and Thoroughfare.
Two of my favorite runs in this stretch are the hill on Thoroughfare below Upper Pow Pow and again on Thoroughfare heading down to the summer trailhead off of Christensen Road. (You can see clips of these runs on Twitter at @UPTreefarmer or on Instagram at @Decompressu.) The lake effect snow created the opportunity to attack both of these hills without the risk of getting out of control! You can see the GoPro video of the ski from the Tomasi Trailhead to Christensen Road on the Remote Workforce Keweenaw YouTube channel at this link:
After all the weekend snow and with more snow in the forecast for the week ahead, Monday turned out to be a great day for moving snow! After clearing the driveway, the back deck, and lake deck, it was on to the roof for about 3 hours of cardio!
I finally got in a little more ice fishing this week! Tuesday was the mildest day we have had for some time which made it really pleasant to be on the ice. This beautiful weather and particularly the sunset helped to compensate for the lack of biting fish!
Wednesday was a combination of township business and running with the Keweenaw Running Group. This week was the 100th Winter Carnival at Michigan Tech University and Wednesday was the All-Nighter for students to complete their snow sculptures. As an annual event with the KRG, we go on an easy going run through the campus, past the fraternities and downtown to check out the activity. This year it was snowing really hard which really added to the atmosphere!
Battling with construction supply chain issues like everyone else, we finally had a victory this past week the arrival and installation of the garage door! It looks like we are also on a path to have UPPCO install the new electrical line from the road and install the new meter this coming week!
Friday and Saturday were a log jam of errands and other business, but I did manage to squeeze in a little more ice fishing on Friday afternoon. I just missed on a couple of bites during the heavy snow and wind. While I didn’t have success, a friend shared this photo of a nice walleye he caught and released earlier in the week!
