Winter Solstice
This week brought the official beginning of winter with the arrival of the solstice. Heading into the season change, a system snow followed by lake effect snow had replaced the losses caused by the previous week’s thaw. We spent last Saturday cleaning up the remains of our fir that fell in the high winds of the previous week and then spent three hours picking up sticks and branches from the lowest 2k loop on the Chassell Classic Ski Trail so it would be clean for Jim Tervo’s grooming. After all that work and with an awesome moonrise over the lake, a sauna was definitely in order!
Sunrise is a special time of day on Portage Lake. I will feature these from time to time with my posts largely because I find them soothing to the mind while sparking creative thinking at the same time. I caught this time-lapse on Sunday morning with my GoPro:
A very small group of us met up at Swedetown to ski on Sunday afternoon. The conditions were very good and we got in a lot of skiing. You can get a feel for part of the experience by checking out the GoPro link to the Remote Workforce Keweenaw YouTube Channel below.
On our way back from Calumet we ordered takeout from Joey’s and made a stop at Bridgeview Park in Houghton to take in this view of the Portage Lake Lift Bridge before picking it up.
Tuesday was the winter solstice and we celebrated it by going out to snowshoe at the Keweenaw Land Trust’s Winter Solstice Luminary Hike at Lily Creek. Julie helped our friends Carolyn, Mark, and Kathy with setting up the luminaries and I panked down the trail with my snowshoes.
The snow was absolutely pouring down at times while we were there which added to the already beautiful environment! Check out the experience by clicking on the link to the GoPro video on the Remote Workforce Keweenaw YouTube Channel!
