Chasing Waterfalls
This past week started with an article covering Remote Workforce Keweenaw in Crain’s Detroit written by Eric Freedman about “climigrants” who are “seeking refuge from forest fires of Western states, flooding along the saltwater coasts and ever-rising temperatures causing drought in different corners of the continent.” The article featured remote workers Andrew and Shauna Parrish who came to Houghton from Boise Idaho. You can read it here at this link to Crain’s Detroit.
Since it was too hot for my taste to run on Saturday, I slipped in a 10K run on the rail-trail on Sunday morning ahead of our afternoon hike. The temperature was a pleasant 62 degrees with a crosswind of 20 mph. I cruised along at an enjoyable 8:21/miles pace.
Our hiking leader Mark was out of town on a camping trip, so our friend Steve Jurmu (aka Yooper Steve at https://www.funintheup.com) led a hike to Penn Falls on the East Branch of the Firesteel River. This is definitely a lesser known falls in the area, but worth the effort to find given the geological formation through which the river flows.
This waterfall can be reached by hiking a combination of formal and informal ORV trails just off of M-26 to the northeast of where you cross the East Branch of the Firesteel River.
If it is a warm day, be sure to bring your sandals or watershoes along as wading up the conglomerate-based falls is definitely an option. Julie and I chose the high bank to the left of the falls and met the group upstream.

Monday morning I had the opportunity to meet remote worker Andrew Parrish over coffee at Cyberia Cafe in Houghton who is a part of our growing information technology segment in the Keweenaw’s remote workforce. Andrew indicated that he looked at all the videos he could find about Houghton and the Keweenaw on YouTube before moving here and indicated that he liked this one the best:
Monday afternoon, Julie and I went chasing waterfalls on the Slate River Canyon with a focus on Slate Slide Falls and Kukuck’s Falls!
